North Waterloo Farmers Mutual was established on June 9, 1874, when a small group of farmers from three northern townships of Waterloo, Ontario formed an independent farm mutual. The directors—being farmers themselves—personally applied their knowledge and experience whenever possible. By 2014, North Waterloo Farmers Mutual Insurance Company was one of the largest insurers of farm property in Ontario, offering a wide variety of insurance products.
On January 1, 2016, Heartland Farm Mutual Inc. became a legal entity, formed from the merger of North Waterloo Farmers Mutual and Oxford Mutual.
In 2021 Heartland Farm Mutual amalgamated with The Kings Mutual Insurance Company of Berwick, Nova Scotia.
